Opal Update -- January 11, 2000
-
Launch Date: January 14, 2000
-
We're still go for January 14!
-
The dress reheasal went well on Monday, Jan 10. There were
a few minor procedural glitches due to changes in the launch
check list. One involved the removal of thermal blankets on
the first two stages. It took longer than expected but those
will be worked out in the next day or two. Also the nitrogen
purging system used to cool several components was not as
affective as they thought it would be. Not a serious problem
and those issues are being worked out.
-
During launch, I will be able to acquire predicated inclination,
apogee, and perigee numbers. Would someone convert those to Keps?
Do you need any more info?
-
The Air Force is very enthusiastic about our payloads. General
Tattini, commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center, spoke
highly of his interest in the mission, particularly the picosats.
Look like they will be eagerly expecting our results.
-
Launch viewing...the base was completely socked in with fog by about
5:30pm. On base viewing was all but zero. I don't know if fog
is expected on Friday. If someone finds out, please let us know.
So, I would recommend trying to find someplace high to view the
launch. Check out the details on Opal's website. The URL is
below. On the drive back I noticed that road between VAFB and
Santa Maria was clear. Might be some good spots there.
